In typewriters they indicate the lateral spacing. Note that the terms Pica and Elite have different meanings when applied to printer's type where they indicate a style as well as size. Some machines may be slightly different but will be very close. Pica is ten letters per inch and Elite is 12 spaces per inch. As pointed out in typewriters the name gives you the spacing. The scale will tell you the letter spacing even if the machine is not working. Most machines have a scale for the typing line.
